Dumaguete City American Cemetery Centenary

 The 76th Philippine American Friendship Day took place in the 100years old Dumaguete City American Cemetery. This historic day commemorated the  Philippine Independence from  American Rule known as” Republic Day”.

 


This year is extra special as we celebrate the 100 years centennial of the Dumaguete City American Cemetery and the hundred years of the Scouting Movement of Silliman University and the First Boy Scout Troup in the Visayas.

 


 

The American Cemetery inside the Old  Dumaguete Chinese Cemetery was established as part of the original  American Masonic Cemetery in Dumaguete in 1907 part of the area of the cemetery is the grave site of the American Missionaries, pioneers in community building in Dumaguete, and American Teachers. The cemetery area was established as the extension of the American Masonic Cemetery in 1922.

A Heritage clean-up drive was conducted by the Negros Oriental History and Heritage Society, St. Paul University Dumaguete, and in partnership Provincial GSO Office. The Beautification Committee spreadhead by  Prof. Phitz Jaculbe Enojo and Family, Sir Alvin B Mamauag , and Prof. Josefino Penn T. Larena Jr. lead organizer of the yearly 4th of July event.

Sir Joselito B. Blas OIC Consular Office of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dumaguete City was our guest speaker. He mentioned the contribution of the Americans during the Pandemic with a big mark on our History, Heritage, and Culture in our country. The influence of education and scouting movement in nation-building with the teaching of love of country.

 

A Wreath-Laying Ceremony led by  Area Commander of the Knights of Rizal Central Visayas and First Vice Chairman Boy Scouts of the Philippines Negros Oriental Siquijor Council Sir Judge Rafael Crescencio Tan ,KCR , Former Ambassador MacArthur Flores. Corsino KGOR.,Mr.Joseph Miag-ao Ojales new Postmaster of the Dumaguete Post Office, Razz P. Nocete of the GSP NegOr Siquijor  Council .Miss Gemma Minda Laxina Iso Provincial Cultural Officer Negros Oriental , CSE Queen Marie Truno Ferraren, Sir Bernabe Arcaya Jr.and  Scouts from Silliman University, Foundation University, and Tanjay City National High School.

 

We are so grateful to the Technical Team Rover Scout Cezar Lopez and Sir Marlon Fernandez Sumanoy also sang the two national anthems during the Program.

The friendship between the Philippines and America in the hearts of millions of  Negrosanon Pinoys who love and respect will stand out. Some American citizens made Dumaguete and Negros Oriental their permanent home as their safe haven. Happy Philippine -American Friendship and 100 years of the American Cemetery. 





Among the Americans buried here include a host of missionary teachers from Silliman University & American Civic Leaders, such as Henry and Margaret Mack, T. S. Dodd, W. M. Baugh, Ila Smith-Munn, Cal Reed Cole Sr., Elena A. Cole, Cal Reed Cole Jr., Charlie Bell Cole Sr., Rev. Lapsley Armstrong McAfee, Robert Sherry Matheson,Clyde V.Powers ,Charles Bell and Elliot Thomas Bell.
