Modesto P. Sa-onoy: Chronicler, Educator, and Cultural Pioneer of Negros

 

Prof. Modesto P. Sa-onoy was a distinguished historian, educator, journalist, and civic leader whose lifetime of service left an indelible mark on Negros. His passing on September 10, 2026, brought deep sorrow to the community, particularly at his alma mater, La Consolacion College (LCC) Bacolod, where he served as both a student and a dedicated Professor.

Key Achievements & Life Legacy

·         Academic Roots & Teaching: After graduating high school from LCC in 1956, Sa-onoy earned degrees in  Bachelor of Arts in 1961, Bachelor of Science in Education in 1963 and Master of Arts in Education in 1965.

.  He spent 17 years as a professor at LCC, mentoring generations of students before moving into public service and the sugar sector.

·         Historian of Negros: Sa-onoy authored foundational works documenting the region's heritage, including History of Occidental Negros, Church on the Hill, The Chinese in Negros, A Glance at Bacolod, Parroquia de San Diego — 1776–2006, and the two-volume World War II history Against the Rising Sun. He also preserved his alma mater's legacy in the 1993 volume Through the Years: History of La Consolacion College Bacolod.

·         Media & Journalism: A pillar of the local press, he co-founded The Visayan Daily Star, established TODAY News Views (which became SunStar Bacolod), and served two terms as President of the Negros Press Club.

·         Cultural Leadership: As a co-founder of Bacolod’s world-renowned MassKara Festival, he chaired the celebration for over two decades. He also led civic efforts through the Negros Historical Foundation, the Bacolod City College Board of Trustees, and the Ang Banwahanon Awards Committee.

·         Major Honors:

o    Sor Evangelista de San Agustin Award (LCC Bacolod, 2015) — Granted for outstanding achievement and commitment to his alma mater.

o    Ang Banwahanon Award — Bacolod City’s highest recognition for exemplary public service.

o    Order of St. Sylvester (2008) — Conferred by Pope Benedict XVI with the rank of Commander for exceptional service to the Church and society.

Through his research, books, and public leadership, Modesto P. Sa-onoy ensured that the stories, faith, and struggles of Negros would be preserved for generations to come.
